September is almost over, which means NOW is the time to visit Team EFA, also known as Artists Helping Animals. They’re supporting Defenders of Wildlife this month through their charity of the month program & petition signing. These EFA artists are shining a spotlight on the plight of the polar bear, an animal living at ground zero for global warming and increasingly feeling the threat of oil and gas development in their Alaskan habitat.

Pacific walruses usually make their residence floating on ice sheets out in the sea. But this year, the absence of tundra ice has left them crowding the beaches – up to 20,000 at one point this summer! This occurrence is so unusual, scientists are worried about the safety of the animals. Easily spooked, walruses could trample each other to death in a stampede.

Last night was not the first time we got lost, but it was the worst time. We ended up at the edge of a dark Louisiana graveyard with towering monuments to the bayou’s wealthy dead. At midnight, after a day on a boat in the humid soup of the Gulf surrounded by brown pelicans turned black and orange with oil spilled from the Deepwater Horizon, we would have preferred night demons torturing us in our sleep to an endless drive around unknown stretches of the city. But there we were. We were all being patient, kind, (did I mention patient?) strenuously patient, but so, so, tired.
