If you are in bear country it should be routine for you to carry bear spray, as it will protect you from bear conflicts and also prevent bear mortalities.
The Service recently announced it is taking additional time to conduct a thorough assessment of threats facing the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem’s grizzly bear population before issuing a draft delisting proposal. Initially expected this spring or summer, we likely will not see a delisting proposal for Yellowstone bears until the end of this year, after the Service has had time to conduct this analysis.
With spring approaching, grizzly bears are stirring in their dens, marking the beginning of a new season of projects for our field team, which works hard to keep people, property and grizzlies safe.
With humans still expanding into grizzly habitat and delisting proposals soon to come, one thing is certain: the future of grizzlies will depend on our ability to coexist with them.
